On your Ferry Way to Ireland

While it’s true that most of our visitors wing it over here by air, there is another option for reaching our shores – the super-modern, über-comfortable ferry!

Ferry routes are zipping millions of passengers a year between the ports of Ireland and the UK and Europe. Now, obviously, the ferry is not going to beat the plane in some sort of Top Gear race, but taking to the waves can often feel like a bit more of an adventure. When you first catch sight of the hulking ship, casting a long shadow over the port and dwarfing the cars and trucks driving into its belly, you can’t help but get a little thrill of awe.

And that extra time in transit feels more like part of the holiday than just the ‘getting there’ bit! There are floors of entertainment and activities to keep you (and the kids) occupied. Munch on popcorn watching the latest movie releases, linger over a seriously tasty dinner in the restaurants, then indulge in some shopping or bar-hopping. All the while, the simple pleasures of leg-room, fresh air and places for brisk walk are on tap.

And, wait for it, there’s no frantic packing and weighing of luggage, either! You could get delirious with the freedom of being able to pack clothes for every weather, shoes for every whim, the golf bag, camping gear, kids’ toys, and the kitchen sink… well, just in case.

And lest not forget, ferry-farers were in their element when a certain unpronounceable Icelandic volcano woke up and caused mayhem in the skies. The sea proved itself (as it has for centuries) a very reliable mode of transport.

So pack up your sink and take your sweet time coming over to Ireland to go where the roads take you!

About the author

Orla has lived in both Dublin and Kildare for a decade apiece and is torn between the two counties. In her spare time she loves a good read; Irish authors are the current favourite. When her nose is not in a book, she can be found eating at various restaurants in Dublin and scouring charity shops for 'granny chic' handbags. Orla likes to write about food, culture and heritage and loves Ireland's literary history. Favourite place: Bantry Bay, West Cork on a summer's day or George's Street Arcade, Dublin for some serious bargain-hunting.
