12 Days of Christmas in Ireland

Christmas begins

On the first day of Christmas,
my true love sent me
to Ireland for a twelve day party.

On the second day of Christmas,
my true love sent me
To Kilkenny on Ice
I fell down but it’s part of the party.

On the third day of Christmas,
my true love sent me
To Santa in the Mournes
The elves were really leprechauns,
They were good but they couldn’t fool me.

On the fourth day of Christmas,
my true love sent me
To Galway’s Eyre Square,
Magic in the air,
Market stalls everywhere,
The Nutcracker was better than Glee.

Christmas stalls

On the fifth day of Christmas,
my true love sent me
To a country-wide bash,
The All-Ireland Santa Dash,
You shoulda seen them run,
What red-suited fun!
And all funds went to charity.

On the sixth day of Christmas,
my true love sent me
To Carrick-on-Shannon,
For dockside winter fashion,
Food, arts and crafts,
Warm coats and hats,
Story-telling and laughs,
And a cruise after the revelry.

The Christmas Racing festival begins in Leopardstown

On the seventh day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Seven tips on horses,
For six racecourses,
Leopardstown to Limerick,
The atmosphere’s electric
Fairyhouse to Downpatrick,
The odds were fantastic,
This year I was feeling lucky.

On the eighth day of Christmas,
my true love sent me
To Belfast’s Christmas market,
To try a crepe with chocolate,
Two Irish Coffees,
Three sticky toffees,
Four gourmet burgers,
Another coffee with sugar,
Five roasted chestnuts,
Bursting seams in my jacket,
I felt so full I went home early.

Christmas on the Belfast Streets

On the ninth day of Christmas,
my true love said to me
Waterford is buzzing,
With Christmas lights blazing,
I went mad for shopping,
Paused for carol singing,
Fa La La La LA,
The carousel had me spinning,
The mulled wine had me singing,
“What a pretty city”,
I cried with ecstasy.

On the tenth day of Christmas,
my true love sent me,
To Dublin’s Docklands,
Turned winter wonderland,
Traditional German traders,
Glühwein in many flavours,
Present buying fun,
All my shopping done!
The night was crisp and clear,
I was full of cheer
Christmas is in gear,
Oh how good my love is to me.

The Stalls on Dublin’s Docklands Market

On the eleventh day of Christmas,
my true love sent me
To Christmas in Killarney.
I sat on Santa’s knee,
And told him where I’d been,
He said my lover must be loaded,
Next I’d get a diamond,
“Hang on to him”
I told Santa I will
He really fits the bill
I can hardly keep still,
I’ll get a ring tomorrow maybe!

On the twelfth day of Christmas,
My true love sent a note.
I felt faint as I read
His words with dread:
“I’m sick of your demands
A diamond? No chance!
I gave you eleven days
Of markets and plays,
Feasts and presents,
but you still weren’t content.
I’m spending New Year’s Eve without you,
In Dublin’s Gravity Bar venue,
Merry Christmas yourself,
You gold-digging wench!”

Merry Christmas from everyone in Ireland!

Things to See & Do

About the author

Orla has lived in both Dublin and Kildare for a decade apiece and is torn between the two counties. In her spare time she loves a good read; Irish authors are the current favourite. When her nose is not in a book, she can be found eating at various restaurants in Dublin and scouring charity shops for 'granny chic' handbags. Orla likes to write about food, culture and heritage and loves Ireland's literary history. Favourite place: Bantry Bay, West Cork on a summer's day or George's Street Arcade, Dublin for some serious bargain-hunting.

Nice idea, Mickie, great minds think alike! Oh, and Aileen speaks in rhyme all the time, Robin, we just don’t know what to do with her :-) hee-hee! But don’t you worry, she’s definitely not speaking from personal experience on the 12th day… The Guildhall in Derry, now there’s another good idea, Kerry!
Thanks for keeping in touch, guys!

As far as I know, I am part Irish and proud of it, just as Im proud of beeig Indian, and also proud. My male ancestors must have been wanderes. Glad for their help for my ancestry. Ive nevr been to Irland, but when I hear Irish musc and see all of these wonderful pictures, I feel homesick and thats foolish since I have no definate proof of Irish Heritage. Just wishful thinling I guess. I am 78 years old, am a widow with a coker spaniall, a shitsue, wrong spelling, and a 11 year old maltise rescued from a breeding farm. she has no teeth,(like me) and afraid of every one and every thing. but Im giving her all the love she will allow me to . Thanks for letting me see the lovely scenery through the cameras.
